Whether Colorado’s Riar Geer would have been cleared by Buffaloes coach Dan Hawkins to play in Sunday’s season opener against Colorado State became a moot issue Monday when it was announced the junior tight end underwent arthroscopic knee surgery on Friday.
On Monday, Geer was sentenced to two years’ probation and 50 hours of community service by Boulder District Judge Maria Berkenkotter after he pleaded guilty to third-degree assault, a misdemeanor, for his participation in an off-campus brawl March 14. The plea deal dropped an original charge of second-degree felony assault and it requires that Geer take anger-management classes and not consume alcohol.
Hawkins has not announced whether Geer would face a suspension.
