NORTHGLENN — A man whose stepchildren were killed in a collision has pleaded not guilty to charges of beating the other driver to death.

Phillip Chavez of Loveland faces charges of second- degree murder, evidence tampering and driving under the influence in the March 8 death of 62-year-old Glenn Ryburn.

Authorities say Ryburn’s vehicle rear-ended Chavez’s, instantly killing 14-year-old Damien Noyes and 13-year-old Angel Noyes.

An arrest affidavit alleges Chavez assaulted Ryburn while he was still buckled in his car. Ryburn never regained consciousness and died May 16. The coroner ruled he died of blunt-force trauma to his head.
