Sunday. Kids, put on your toques (that’s the funny hat chefs wear), and fire up the oven. The Cutie Pie contest on Sunday is just for bakers ages 3 to 10, so it’s time to start brainstorming a tasty recipe. Bake it, then bring your creation to the Chef Demo tent (part of the weekly Market at Belmar), and enter the competition. Audience members will sample each pie and vote for their favorites. The winner will receive a kid’s baking set and a blue ribbon. Grown-ups are allowed to help, but remember: These little pâtissiers are at the perfect age for concocting unusual, and potentially delicious, recipes. Entries are due at noon Sunday. The Chef Demo tent in front of Press Coffee Co., 7150 W. Alaska Drive, Lakewood. Free.
Saturday-Monday. It’s sad to see summer go, but not so much when there’s the Boulder Creek Hometown Fair. This three-day party celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, and includes all sorts of festival favorites: live music; rides; vendors; a beer garden. But there are a couple of original twists, too. Kids will love The Great Zucchini Race, in which youngsters can decorate a giant zucchini on wheels and race it against others. Adults with capsaicin cravings will want to stick around for The Chili Inferno Cook-Off on Monday. 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday. On the lawn of the Boulder Public Library, 1000 Canyon Blvd., and at Central Park, Broadway and Canyon Boulevard. Free.
Friday-Sunday. Cheyenne will be extra twangy this weekend with two music festivals going on: The Cheyenne Heart of the West Festival and the Magic City Bluegrass Festival. At the Heart of the West fest on Friday and Saturday, Western musicians set the scene for cowboy poetry, storytelling and shopping at three venues. The Magic City festival takes over Lions Park Saturday and Sunday, with a public workshop, a dance and a cowboy church service mixed in with the nonstop bluegrass jams. 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 9:45 p.m. Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Sunday. The Atlas Theater, 211 W. 16th St.; 307-635-0199. The Plains Hotel, 1600 Central Ave.; 307-638-3311. Cheyenne Depot, West 15th Street and Central Avenue. Saturday-Monday. Louisville welcomes cooler days and quieter nights with this weekend’s Fall Festival. Community participation is encouraged at many events, including a pet parade, the Motorfest Car Show and the 73rd annual Labor Day Parade. Another highlight of the weekend is the Coal Creek Crossing 5K, 10-Mile and Kids Fun Run. The Sunday race benefits Louisville’s service organizations, like the library foundation and the historical commission. 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday. Community Park, 955 Bella Vista Drive, Louisville. Free. Additional charges apply to register for races, car show, and bocce and horseshoe competitions. Visit for a full schedule.
