NEW YORK — The Red Sox acquired Mark Kotsay from the Braves for a minor-leaguer Wednesday, adding depth to their outfield one day after J.D. Drew went on the disabled list.

Kotsay hit .289 with six home runs and 37 RBIs in 88 games with the Braves.

The Braves got outfielder Luis Sumoza in the deal. Sumoza, 20, batted .301 in 51 games for Single-A Lowell (Mass.) this season.

Abscessed tooth keeps Hamilton out

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton, who leads the major leagues with 116 RBIs, was a late scratch from the lineup against the Royals because of an abscessed tooth.

• Rangers right-hander Vicente Padilla will miss his scheduled start Friday against the Angels with inflammation in the muscle joint between the neck and shoulder.

Orioles pitcher Daniel Cabrera is feeling discomfort in his forearm, and although an MRI showed no damage, manager Dave Trembley said the right-hander might miss his scheduled start Saturday against Tampa Bay.

• No. 2 draft pick Pedro Alvarez refused to sign his contract with the Pirates, and the players’ association filed a grievance claiming the Aug. 15 deadline was unilaterally extended by Major League Baseball without the union’s permission.
