Coloradans last year paid more than $26 billion in premiums to about 1,306 companies to cover their insurance needs, according to a report released this week by the state Division of Insurance.

The Colorado Insurance Industry Statistical Report reported that residents spent more in 2007 on accident and health insurance premiums, representing 33 percent of the total insurance premiums paid in the state. The second-largest premium category was for annuities, with 16 percent of the total. Automobile insurance tied for third place, along with deposit-type funds, each accounting for 10 percent of the annual premiums.
