Surgery on Thursday to remove a tumor from the auditory nerve of Maureen Schaffer — wife of Bob Schaffer, the Republican candidate for Colorado’s open Senate seat — “went really, really well,” according to a spokesman.

But it will take two to three days before doctors will know how quickly she’ll recover, he said.

Maureen Schaffer underwent what doctors consider a very delicate procedure to remove the benign tumor at a hospital in Phoenix, and the candidate has taken a respite from the campaign trail to be in Arizona with her.

“She is just in the initial recovery,” said Dick Wadhams, Schaffer’s campaign manager. “We’ll know more later after she’s got two or three days of recovery under her. But from what I understand, the doctors feel good about getting the tumor out.”

Schaffer could be back in Colorado as soon as late next week, Wadhams said, depending on how well his wife does. Earlier this month, the campaign announced Schaffer would be taking between one and two weeks off.

Doctors found the tumor in June.
