DENVER—U.S. Forest Service officials say a bark beetle infestation of “epidemic proportions” has kept 14 Colorado campgrounds closed this summer.
Officials say firefighters, youth groups and Colorado Correction industry crews have cut down dead trees this summer at the campgrounds in an attempt to reopen them. The campgrounds affected are in Arapaho, Roosevelt, Medicine Bow and Routt and White Snake national forests.
The beetles have killed about 1.5 million acres of Colorado’s lodgepole pines. The U.S. Forest Service closed campgrounds because of concerns that the affected trees may fall.
