SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — Curlin won the $500,000 Woodward Stakes to move a step closer to defending his horse of the year title, beating longshot Past the Point by 1 1/4 lengths Saturday at Saratoga Race Course.

The $300,000 winner’s share moved Curlin past Skip Away as the second-leading money winning thoroughbred ever with more than $9.79 million and leaves him less than $200,000 behind Cigar ($9.9 million).

It was Curlin’s fourth victory in five starts this year.

Zabriskie wins pro time trial

GREENVILLE, S.C. — David Zabriskie won his third straight USA Cycling professional time trial championship.

The 29-year-old from Salt Lake City is the only cyclist to win the pro-only event since its inception in 2006. He completed the course in 40 minutes, 39.40 seconds, finishing five seconds faster than runner-up Tom Zirbel of Boulder. Christian Vande Velde, also of Boulder and a Garmin-Chipotle teammate of Zabriskie’s, was third, 10 seconds behind the winner.

• Liquigas won the team time trial of the Spanish Vuelta in Granada, with Filippo Ponzzato surging ahead to take the first stage of the cycling season’s third major tour.

Crew clips FC Dallas

FRISCO, Texas — Guillermo Barros Schelotto had two assists, giving him a league-leading 16 on the season, to lead the Columbus Crew to a 2-1 victory over FC Dallas.

Columbus kept FC Dallas winless in its past three games despite getting outshot 18-8.

• Landon Donovan scored two goals for the Los Angeles Galaxy, but Shalrie Joseph’s first goal of the season helped the New England Revolution salvage a 2-2 tie.

• The New York Red Bulls extended their unbeaten streak to six games with a 0-0 tie with D.C. United.

• Darren Huckerby scored in the 84th minute as the San Jose Earthquakes defeated the Kansas City Wizards 2-1.

• Atiba Harris scored in injury time as CD Chivas USA beat Toronto FC 2-1.

Leslie leads Sparks

LOS ANGELES — Lisa Leslie had 18 points and 12 rebounds as the Los Angeles Sparks defeated the San Antonio Silver Stars 58-53.

• Nicole Powell had 20 pointsto lead the Sacramento Monarchs past the Houston Comets 80-65.

• Tamika Catchings had 23 points as the Indiana Fever beat the Atlanta Dream 87-72.

• Rookie Candice Wiggins scored 22 points in the Minnesota Lynx’s 92-78 win over the Washington Mystics.
