NEW YORK — U.S. Ryder Cup captain Paul Azinger filled out the last four members of his squad Tuesday — Steve Stricker, Hunter Mahan, J.B. Holmes and Chad Campbell.
Stricker, Mahan and Holmes will make their Ryder Cup debuts in the Sept. 19-21 matches at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky.
The eight players who qualified were Phil Mickelson, Stewart Cink, Kenny Perry, Jim Furyk, Anthony Kim, Justin Leonard, Ben Curtis and Boo Weekley. Kim, Curtis and Weekley also are rookies.
The six U.S. players with Ryder Cup experience are a combined 19-37-17. Europe’s eight veteran players are a combined 40-27-12.
Oliver beats Robles
LAUSANNE, Switzerland — Denver East High School graduate David Oliver defeated gold medalist and world- record holder Dayron Robles in the 110-meter hurdles, running 13.02 seconds to the Cuban’s 13.17 at the Athletissima 2008.
Asafa Powell matched the second-fastest 100 meters ever (9.72) and Usain Bolt clocked the second-fastest 200 this year (19.63) as the Jamaicans dominated the 100- and 200-meter sprints.
Shanteau recovering quickly
ATLANTA — Olympic swimmer Eric Shanteau is recovering quickly from cancer surgery and already planning his return to the pool.
In his first interview since last week’s surgery to remove a cancerous testicle, Shanteau said he made it through with minimal complications. He’s confident surgeons got all of the disease, though he won’t know for sure until he goes back for a follow-up exam in a couple of weeks.
Shanteau said he will return to his training base in Austin, Texas, next week and hopes to get back in the water sometime around Sept. 15.
Two Sooners confirmed in brawl
NORMAN, Okla. — Two University of Oklahoma athletes stabbed at a nightclub during a brawl that reportedly involved guns, knives and tire irons were identified by police.
Football defensive end Frank Alexander and freshman basketball guard Ray Willis suffered knife wounds during the Sunday morning altercation, officers said. Alexander, 18, was treated and released from Norman Regional Hospital. Willis’ condition wasn’t immediately available, although police said both stabbing victims required surgery.
• Nebraska offensive lineman Andy Christensen has been found not guilty of first-degree sexual assault in Lancaster (Neb.) County.
• Virginia Tech will return to the two-quarterback system it used last season, with Tyrod Taylor and Sean Glennon sharing the duties.
• Elmer Willhoite, an All-American guard on Southern California’s Rose Bowl championship team in 1952, died Aug. 21 in Hawthorne, Nev. He was 78.
