Getting your player ready...

So Domonique Foxworth is gone to Atlanta.

Surprised? By the timing, yes, but not by the development.

This wasn’t about talent. Players who get cut in the NFL like to say it’s a numbers game. If that’s the case, Foxworth certainly was one of the Broncos’ best 53 players.

To wit: I asked him during training camp to estimate how many of the other 31 NFL teams he could start for. His response?

“Thirty two. I think I can start here.”

But he wasn’t starting, he was making about $900,000, and he was scheduled to hit free agency after the season. So the Broncos traded him to Atlanta today for an undisclosed choice in the 2009 draft.

Rule No. 1 in covering the NFL is never make it personal. Whether you’re criticizing a player or piling praise on him, never make it personal.

But that’s easier said than done with Foxworth. He was, is and always will be among the NFL’s classiest acts. I can’t wait to see what that kid makes of himself in the next 20 years. He’s that rare combination of smart and articulate, yet genuine and down to earth.

I’m not sure what’s in store for him this year or next, but I know one thing: Whatever he does after football, he’ll be successful.
