A 19-year-old Pine woman pled guilty to burglarizing homes and stealing mail in the Conifer and Jefferson County area today.
Sophie Rose Shafer named 11 victims in her plea, according to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s office.
Shafer and her boyfriend Michael John Pantera, 27, of Denver, were arrested following a crime spree late last year.
Authorities say they drove around taking mail from mailboxes, checked it for cash or gift cards and then threw the remainder of the mail on the road.
“During this mail theft investigation in late November 2007 the Park County and Jefferson County sheriffs’ offices had numerous residential burglaries reported,” according to a Jefferson County DA’s office release.
Investigators found stolen mail in a Wheat Ridge hotel where Pantera and Shafer were staying and arrested them there.
They also learned that the couple had a storage locker where they found numerous stolen items.
Shafer pled guilty to burglary, a class three felony and faces up to 12 years in prison. She is scheduled to be sentenced September 29.
Pantera has pled not guilty to charges including theft and false information to a pawnbroker. He has a three-week jury trial set to begin January 13, 2009.
