Move over, John Force, because another active drag racer is approaching legendary status. Schumacher, the son of longtime NHRA team owner Don Schumacher, is on the verge of becoming the best top fuel driver in the history of the sport. On Monday in the NHRA’s premier race at Indianapolis, Schumacher won for the sixth consecutive time and 11th of the year — breaking his own records — and tied Joe Amato with a career-high 52 titles. Schumacher, 38, began his winning streak at Bandimere Speedway in July and has gone 24-0 in elimination rounds since arriving at the Morrison track.

ON THE MOVE: JIMMIE JOHNSON

Threepeat is possible

The 2006 and 2007 Cup Series champion is in good position to make a run at three consecutive titles. Johnson won Sunday’s race in Fontana, Calif., to secure the No. 3 position for the Chase for the Championship. After this weekend’s regular-season finale at Richmond, Va., Kyle Busch (eight wins) will be the top playoff seed, followed by Carl Edwards (six) and Johnson (four). Unlike the top three, the final nine positions could change.
