Air Force assistant coach Matt Wallerstedt knows all about football at Wyoming’s War Memorial Stadium, but his experience is from the Cowboys’ side of the field.
Wallerstedt, a Wyoming assistant from 1997-2002, returns to Laramie on Saturday. He is in his first year on the Falcons’ staff as assistant head coach and inside linebackers coach.
“Putting six years into a place, which is the longest I’ve ever been in one place, stays with you,” he said. “We enjoyed Wyoming. I haven’t been in that environment as an opponent before. It’s going to be fun.”
Wallerstedt has told the Falcons, many of whom will play in Laramie for the first time, that they are in for a rough environment.
“It seems over the years, there has been a title game at stake many of the years the two teams have played,” Wallerstedt said when asked why the series is so competitive. “When I was with the Cowboys in 1997 and 1998, the game those years were pretty much for the title. Air Force got us. Each club knows they’re in for a 60-minute fight.”
Elway connection.
Sacramento State second-year coach Marshall Sperbeck’s bio in the Hornets’ media guide includes an entry from Hall of Famer John Elway. It turns out that Sperbeck’s brother, Jeff, is an agent who represented Elway.
“I’ve known John for a while,” the Sacramento State coach said Wednesday on the Big Sky coaches’ teleconference. Sacramento State opens Colorado State’s home season Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
Footnotes.
CSU offensive guard Shelley Smith and linebacker Mychal Sisson missed practice for a second straight day with ankle sprains. Neither has been ruled out of the game. . . . A lightning warning interrupted practice Wednesday.
