FORT COLLINS, Colo.—The City Council has voted 6-0 for a resolution opposing a massive water project that includes plans to draw from the Poudre River and build a new reservoir.

Council members on Tuesday said they were concerned about the effects the massive Glade Reservoir and Northern Integrated Supply Project could have on the city and river.

A draft environmental impact statement on the pipeline, dam and reservoir project is under public review.

The Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District says the project would provide 40,000 acre-feet of water to 15 water providers and is needed to help meet an expected threefold increase in water demands by 2050.

However, the City Council has concerns about water quality, costs of upgrading treatment plants, and the potential cost of upgrading wastewater treatment facilities that may be required by decreased flows on the Poudre.

The project is expected to cost at least $400 million.
