LARAMIE — The same story over and over gets old . . . and frustrating.

The Cowboys were hoping their backbreaking turnovers would be a thing of the past with first-year offensive coordinator Bob Cole.

But the Cowboys reverted to their past against Mountain West Conference rival Air Force on Saturday.

Wyoming turned the ball over five times with four fumbles and one interception. The Cowboys’ defense held the Falcons to just three field goals following the turnovers.

When the Falcons got the ball at the Wyoming 12-yard line, Air Force just got three.

When the Cowboys’ offense couldn’t get rolling, senior linebacker Ward Dobbs grabbed an interception and gave the Cowboys their best field position of the day.

“It makes you pretty sick to the stomach,” Dobbs said. “In the last three years, I have heard enough of ‘good job.’

“I think the difference this year is I know our offense is a lot better. They know they are, and they will be. We need to pick it up right now and can’t lose any more games.”

Gabe Knapton led the Cowboys’ defense with 16 tackles, followed by Chris Prosinski with 13 and Fred Givens with 12.

The Cowboys held the Falcons to 276 total yards, 261 on the ground and 15 in the air. In 2007, Air Force averaged 419.4 total offensive yards per game.

“We did about everything we could,” Givens said. “We played a solid game up front. We just couldn’t pick up the win.”

Wyoming coach Joe Glenn said that it’s back to basics for the Cowboys.

“It’s the same thing that you teach children in school,” Glenn said. “If you are starting to struggle a little bit, you take things away. You do fewer things and do them better.”

Take away the turnover. That’s all the Wyoming defense needs.
