Democrats and Republicans exchanged fire Saturday in a flap over flags.
Denver Post columnist David Harsanyi wrote in his blog Saturday morning that Republicans claimed that a worker at Invesco Field at Mile High in Denver had saved thousands of unused flags from the Democratic National Convention that were headed for the garbage. The flags were handed out during Saturday’s GOP rally in Colorado Springs.
Democratic National Committee spokeswoman Karen Finney issued a statement Saturday charging that McCain supporters “wrongfully took leftover bundles of our flags from the stadium to play a cheap political stunt calling into question our patriotism.”
The Democrats said the flags removed from Invesco were “intended for other events and taken without permission.”
An Invesco spokesman told Harsanyi that the majority of the bags with flags in them were near the trash, on a dock, and would have been thrown away. The person told Harsanyi it was probably an oversight by the Democrats rather than any nefarious plot against the flag.
