A Boulder lawyer will defend Diego Olmos Alcalde, the accused killer of Susannah Chase, after he fired the public defenders who had been handling his case.

Judge James Klein has appointed Mary Claire Mulligan, of Mulligan & Mulligan, to the case.

Alcalde, 39, told Klein on Thursday that he couldn’t work with the public defenders, Seth Temin and Yasmin Fourouzandeh.

Boulder police arrested Alcalde in January after DNA found on Chase was matched to his in a national databank.

Chase, a 23-year-old University of Colorado senior, was beaten with a baseball bat and raped near her Boulder apartment in 1997.
