AIR FORCE ACADEMY — University of Houston officials have informed the Air Force Academy that a decision will be made no later than noon MT Wednesday where Saturday’s scheduled football game will be played.

The basis to the question is Hurricane Ike that could target the Houston area some time Friday, leaving Saturday’s 1:30 p.m. MT game in jeopardy. Jim Trego, the academy’s senior associate athletic director for external affairs, said he was told the game either would be played in Houston as scheduled or moved to Dallas and Texas Stadium if the decision is to move the site.

“There has been no discussion on potentially canceling the game,” Trego said. “We want to play it, they want to play it, they’re determined the game will be played even if it means moving it to Dallas,” Trego said. “There aren’t any possibilities of playing the game on a different weekend because of each team’s remaining schedule.

“At some point in time they have to pull the trigger on a decision. We had agreed to play the game on Thursday, but we’re past the time to make a decision on that. We just about have to know by Wednesday to change travel plans if the game is to be moved.”

Trego said he is in constant contact with John Robinson, deputy AD at Houston. Robinson noted that there was more optimism Tuesday morning that Hurricane Ike might take a path away from the Houston area. However, if the path seems headed for the Houston, the area could be evacuated.

“When it gets into the gulf, you don’t know what it’s going to do,” Trego said. “They’re looking at the possibility of at least wind and rain.”

Trego indicated that if the conditions were only wind and rain, the game would be played in Houston, but the time of the game could change.
