GOLDEN — Jefferson County school officials have announced that a controversial school for expelled and at-risk middle-school students will not be built near Warren Tech.
Residents of the Sixth Avenue West neighborhood have raised concerns about the location of the Johnson Program building, obstructed views and the types of students who would attend.
“This decision is being made with the best interests of the Johnson students and the neighborhood in mind,” according to a Jeffco schools news release issued this afternoon.
The release said the district will involve the community in any future building plans on the Warren Tech campus.
District officials acknowledged that they failed to notify nearby residents of the building plans, saying parents were involved but they didn’t live in the immediate area because the Johnson Program is a districtwide program.
Opposition to relocation of the school from its current site near the main Golden post office was raised in a series of small-group meetings and a Monday night community forum attended by about 150 residents.
