OMAHA, Neb.—The American Red Cross has sent three dozen volunteers from Nebraska to the Gulf Coast to help residents displaced by Hurricane Ike.
More volunteers are taking calls from Texas and Louisiana at the Red Cross’ Heartland Chapter in Omaha.
The storm crashed ashore early Saturday morning and blew out skyscraper windows, cut power to millions and swamped thousands of homes along the coast.
About 600 members of the Nebraska National Guard have been in Louisiana to assist with damage from Hurricane Gustov, which made landfall over Labor Day weekend. Twenty more members were sent to Texas on Friday to help with the latest storm.
