NEW YORK — The New York Yankees recalled pitcher Phil Hughes from Triple-A on Saturday, and he could start this week in search of his first win this season.
Hughes was expected to be a key member of New York’s rotation this year but was 0-4 with a 9.00 ERA in six starts before being sidelined with a stress fracture in a rib. He struck out 12 in five innings Friday night to help Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre beat Durham 20-2.
Hughes may start Wednesday night against the Chicago White Sox.
Twins activate Cuddyer.
Minnesota outfielder Michael Cuddyer was activated from the 15-day disabled list before Saturday’s doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles, and Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said he would use him only as an emergency pinch hitter for now.
Cuddyer went on the DL with a strained tendon in his left index finger June 30, then broke his left foot during a rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A Rochester on Aug. 8.
Cubs-Astros series moved.
Two games between the Cubs and Astros that were postponed this weekend in Houston because of Hurricane Ike now will be played in Milwaukee.
The Cubs and Astros will play at 6:05 p.m. MDT today and 11:05 a.m. Monday at Miller Park, with Houston being the home team. If the third game of the series is needed, it will be Sept. 29 at Houston.
Beltre to have season-ending surgeries.
The Seattle Mariners said third baseman Adrian Beltre has decided to undergo thumb and shoulder surgeries this week.
