KHARTOUM, SUDAN — Darfur rebels who signed a peace deal with Sudan’s central government say government forces waging an offensive in the region have attacked one of their bases.

The U.N.-African Union mission in Darfur reported government attacks last week on villages in northern Darfur.

Mohamed Bashir, aide to former rebel leader Minni Minawi, said government forces moved south and attacked their base in Jebel Marra, killing at least three fighters on Saturday.

Military spokesman Osman al-Aghbash said Sunday the assault on the bases was to pursue “bandits.” Minawi was the only rebel leader to sign a peace deal with the government in 2006 and was appointed presidential adviser. In June, he returned to Darfur, citing lack of implementation.
