Fans of the Auburn Tigers and Mississippi State Bulldogs sure must have been surprised when a baseball game broke out Saturday night on the football field.
Oh, OK. That didn’t really happen, but Auburn’s 3-2 win in Starkville, Miss., sure did a good impression of one, or maybe a high-scoring soccer match. In fact, the schools’ baseball teams met three times last season, and they combined for 14, seven and 15 runs.
Some of the truly offensive numbers in the first 3-2 final in a Southeastern Conference football game:
• Third-down conversions . . . a rarity: Mississippi State was 0-for-14, Auburn 3-for-16.
• The Bulldogs had only 116 total yards and six first downs.
• The Tigers lost three fumbles.
“I never really felt threatened last night of losing that ballgame once we got ahead 3-0,” Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville told The AP.
