A Thornton man who reported finding a syringe in a bag of potato chips has been charged with tampering with a consumer product and making false statements.
Jacob John Polick, 35, reported finding the needle in a bag of Frito-Lay potato chips he bought at a Thornton Safeway on Jan. 2.
“He was later interviewed by an (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) agent regarding the find,” Jeff Dorschner, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Denver, said in a news release. He repeated the story to the agent, Dorschner said.
Polick could not be reached for comment.
He was arrested on Sept. 12 after a federal grand jury indicted him a few days earlier.
Prosecutors believe Polick hoped to profit from the report.
