LAS VEGAS — Omar Clayton threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Phillip Payne on the Rebels’ first offensive play of overtime to beat Iowa State 34-31 on Saturday night.
Iowa State (2-2), which lost its 13th straight road game, scored first in OT on a 37-yard field goal by Grant Mahoney for the Cyclones’ first lead.
The Rebels (3-1) needed one offensive play to win it.
Clayton, who finished with three touchdown passes and one touchdown run, threw a perfect fade pass to Payne in the corner of the end zone.
The same play helped the Rebels force overtime last weekend in their 23-20 upset of Arizona State.
TCU 48, SMU 7
DALLAS — Joseph Turner ran for 67 yards and a pair of 4-yard touchdowns for TCU. The Horned Frogs (4-0) outgained SMU 498-210 in total yards. The Mustangs (1-3) have allowed all four of their opponents to score more than 35 points.
The Horned Frogs have not trailed this season and are off to their best start since 2003, when they started the season 10-0. They face a tougher matchup next weekend when they go on the road to play No. 2 Oklahoma.
Tulsa 56, New Mexico 14
TULSA, Okla. — David John- son threw for 469 yards and six touchdowns, fueling Tulsa’s rout. Johnson, who entered the game as the nation’s leader in pass efficiency, completed 24-of-39 passes and had two interceptions.
Tulsa (3-0) finished with 606 total yards against a defense that had been allowing just 305 per game.
Tulsa limited New Mexico (1-3) to 316 total yards.
