The black dresses were anything but little at Sunday’s 60th Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles. Television’s leading ladies were dripping in beads, swathed in lace, and trimmed with fluttery sleeves and shawls for the ceremony.

The best dresses fit like second skin and were simply accessorized, such as Tina Fey’s silk faille gown from David Meister and Sandra Oh’s lace dress by Oscar de la Renta. Glenn Close made a strong choice in a black dress with lacy coverup, and the wispy sleeves on Sally Field’s dress served a similar purpose. The same couldn’t be said for Mary Tyler Moore, whose skinny but flabby arms begged for sleeves.

Despite all the black, there were flashes of brilliant color, including Brooke Shields’ ruffled raspberry Badgley Mischka gown, Teri Hatcher’s marigold Monique Lhuillier and Holly Hunter’s plunge-neck violet dress. And some went the combo route — both Vanessa Williams and Jennifer Love Hewitt chose black and white treatments. Williams’ Kevan Hall gown with beaded strap showcased another big trend of the evening, the one-shoulder dress. Others who liked the look were Laura Linney, Christina Applegate, Mariska Hargitay, Jane Krakowski and Heidi Klum, who had so many wardrobe changes we lost count.

Huge earrings and cuff bracelets were the strongest accessories. Metallic clutch bags were also de rigueur, especially if you weren’t toting the night’s other gold charm, Emmy herself.
