Two Moore Middle School eighth-grade girls were struck by a car early this morning on their way to school, and one of them was taken to Children’s Hospital with injuries, authorities say.

The names of the 13-year-old children have not been released. One of the girls was taken to Children’s Hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries, said Stephanie Topkoff, Westminster police spokeswoman.

The second girl was treated in the school’s clinic and released to her parents, said Lynn Setzer, spokeswoman for Jefferson County Public Schools.

Cassandra Miller, 23, was ticketed for running a red light, Topkoff said. She has a valid Colorado driver’s license, and it does not appear that alcohol or drugs were involved.

The accident happened at 7:17 a.m. in front of the school at 8455 W. 88th Ave. in Westminster, Setzer said.

Sun may have affected Miller’s ability to see the two girls, she said.
