Brandon Marshall is a very, very confident player.
What’s that? Yeah, you’re right. Forget confident. He’s downright cocky.
Even when he thought he might be suspended for the first two games, Marshall thought he was headed to the Pro Bowl. You can imagine how he feels now that he leads the league in catches despite missing the Broncos’ season opener.
But there is one thing that Marshall needs to improve on. By his own account, he says, “I didn’t score enough touchdowns” in 2007.
He caught 102 passes last season, but scored only seven touchdowns. If there’s any number Marshall wanted to improve this season, it’s that latter one. Seven touchdowns? For a player of his enormous talent? That wasn’t getting it done.
Enter 2008, when, sure enough, Marshall has caught two touchdown passes in two games. Surprised? Hardly. He isn’t, and we shouldn’t be.
Marshall has emerged into the perfect storm for defensive backs. He’s too quick for safeties and too physical for cornerbacks. Every time he touches the ball in the open field, he’s a threat to score.
And to think, the Broncos got him in the fourth round of the 2006 draft. Talk about your draft-day home runs. That was more like a grand slam.
