A dispute between divorcing spouses led to a suicide in Weld County this afternoon, according to Eaton police.
When the husband went to retrieve his belongings at their Cedar Street residence in Eaton, an argument erupted that led to the woman being assaulted, said Capt. Art Mueller.
The husband reportedly tried to drag his wife into the basement, where weapons were stored, Mueller said.
The woman fought him off, ran out the back door and to a neighbor’s home for help.
When police knocked on the door of the home shortly after noon, they heard a gunshot inside, Mueller said.
A SWAT camera went inside and found the man dead on the basement floor from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Mueller said.
The woman was taken to North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley for treatment of minor injuries from the struggle to get free. Residents near the home received a reverse-911 call, but Mueller was not sure how many were evacuated.
The names of the couple will be released tomorrow, as next of kin are contacted and the investigation continues, Mueller said.
