GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—The $120 million cleanup of a uranium processing site in western Colorado is complete.
The area in Uravan was a major producer of uranium during the Cold War.
Rebecca Thomas of the Environmental Protection Agency says the EPA certified completion of the cleanup Monday for the Superfund site.
Workers removed more than 13 million cubic yards of mill tailings, evaporation-pond precipitates, water-treatment sludge, contaminated soil and debris.
The site had been operated by Dow Chemical subsidiary Umetco Minerals Corp. since 1984. Management is now being transferred to the Department of Energy.
