George Karl said the Nuggets were going to focus on defense, but good grief.

“We didn’t do any offense,” guard Allen Iverson said Tuesday after the first training camp practice. “No plays, no offense, strictly defense. We concentrated on defense — transition and pick-and-roll. It’s important for us to be strong in those areas.”

Last season, the Nuggets averaged the second-most points in the NBA but also allowed the second-most points. Tuesday, Karl brought in a couple of high school and college referees to officiate the scrimmage because “we’re trying to be more aggressive,” the coach said of his team’s defense. “With what you can get away with, the whistle is part of being aggressive — sometimes you have to adapt to the whistle.”

Iverson, above left, is a veteran known for occasionally expressing his displeasure to a ref. He laughed when asked if he jawed at a ref during practice.

“It was probably the first time I never said something to a referee,” Iverson said. “I guess the scrimmage was too short.”
