An Arvada man is facing a handful of charges after firing pellets at a neighbor’s cat perched in a window.

James Grill, 54, is facing misdemeanor charges of animal abuse, criminal mischief and reckless endangerment. Grill was booked and released on Tuesday.

Grill is accused of firing pellets across the street at the home where Jenifer Carter, her children and pets live. One of her two cats, Princess, was hit in the leg. An x-ray showed possibly two pellets shattered the cat’s bone.

“The first thing I thought was somebody’s shooting at the house with a BB gun or a pellet gun,” the single mother told 9News.

Carter initially planned to have the cat’s leg amputated, which would be cheaper than the estimated $1,200 to repair the cat’s leg.

After her story aired this week on 9NEWS an orthopedic surgeon at Care Animal Hospital in Arvada agreed to do the surgery, using money from the Care for Strays fund.

The surgery is scheduled for Friday morning.
