GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—A Rifle resident has been sentenced to probation and ordered to pay $4,000 to a Glenwood Springs animal shelter after pleading guilty to abusing a dog that later died.

Daniel Eliseo Zepeda Perez was sentenced Thursday to a year of probation. The 37-year-old Perez was also fined more than $5,500.

Authorities say Perez’s 2-year-old mastiff named Dora was severely underweight and had a severe infection when she was seized by Garfield County sheriff’s deputies in June.

They say she was unable to walk and had to drag herself to care for a litter of puppies.

Authorities say veterinarians and the Glenwood Springs shelter tried to save her but couldn’t.
