Talks between Qwest and the union representing more than 20,000 workers — described as “sensitive” by one official — entered its second day Thursday with little word of progress.

The company’s contract with the Communications Workers of America expired Tuesday, and union members rejected a new deal the same day. Though members authorized a strike, none is imminent, CWA spokesman Al Kog ler said.

Meanwhile, Qwest confirmed layoffs in its network and mass-market groups but would not say how many.
