STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo.—Routt County officials say the sheriff is in danger of overspending his $4.3 million budget by $300,000, and they’re asking for answers.
County commissioners sent Sheriff Gary Wall a letter last month suggesting he hasn’t stayed on top of his spending and asking questions about how he is managing the budget.
Wall said Thursday he’s working on his response but his department’s budget system isn’t sophisticated enough to provide all the specifics the commissioners want.
Wall says he inherited the current system from the previous administration and that he’s working to change it.
County budget officials say overtime is the biggest factor in the sheriff’s spending problems.
Routt County has said its overall revenues are expected to be down $1.9 million this year.
