Getting your player ready...

Brandon Marshall caught 20 passes during his rookie season. So why mention it two years later? Because another Broncos rookie, Eddie Royal, already has caught 27.

That puts Royal on pace for 108. Nothing unusual there except that the franchise record for catches by a rookie is 51, set by another second-round draft choice, Vance Johnson, in 1985. Fifty one? Royal could have that many by the Broncos’ bye week later this month.

It isn’t just about the numbers, though. Royal is the perfect complement to Marshall. At 5-foot-10 and 182 pounds, he’s smaller and faster than Marshall, who stands 6-4 and weighs 230.

Marshall can run over defensive backs; Royal can run past them. Marshall can catch the ball over the middle; Royal can stretch the field. Marshall can turn singles into doubles with his running ability after the catch; Royal can hit home runs.

With those two on the field, the Broncos’ passing game figures to remain among the most productive in the league. For today and for years to come.
