GOLDEN — Eric Rooney, 19, was sentenced Friday to 18 years in prison for his role in the April 2007 shooting death of Dylan Newman, 21.

Rooney, who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, was a juvenile at the time of the shooting and was charged as an adult.

Five were charged with Newman’s murder. Brothers Adam Zamora, 22, and Aaron Zamora, 21, were found guilty in July and will be sentenced Oct. 31.

Jeffrey Derek Wolf, 19, has pleaded guilty to marijuana possession.

Jeffrey Serge Depault was sentenced to 42 years in prison in August.

Prosecutors said Newman arranged to buy a large amount of marijuana through Wolf, who was his neighbor. Wolf contacted Depault, who knew Aaron Zamora. Both Zamoras were known drug dealers.

On April 3, 2007, Depault, the Zamoras and several other young men met Newman at Rooney’s south Jefferson County house, which he shared with his grandmother, under the pretense of making a sale.

The transaction never took place. In the Zamora trial, evidence was presented that the plan was to rob Newman, with Rooney and the others sharing in the money.

Newman asked to see the marijuana, and a struggle took place between Newman and Adam Zamora in which Newman was shot.
