Hunters who haven’t visited certain favorite haunts in north central Colorado in recent months might be surprised at what they find.

Widespread beetle kill among lodgepole forests in Grand, Summit, Eagle and Jackson counties has produced a profound change both in appearance and in strategy.

In places where die-off occurred two or more years ago, many evergreens have lost their needles, providing greater visibility across much broader areas, particularly on steeper slopes. A thatch of moist needles also makes for quieter walking, another boon to success.
