Florida farmworkers are challenging Chipotle to prove its slogan “food with integrity.”
The Coalition of Immokalee Workers and supporters want Chipotle to join other food industry groups in working with them to improve wages and conditions for tomato pickers.
The workers gathered at Chipotle headquarters Monday and will end their vigil today at 1 p.m.
The workers received an e-mail from Chipotle chief executive Steve Ells saying the company will begin to “pay an additional penny per pound for all the tomatoes that it purchases from its Florida suppliers,” as well as “pursue tomato suppliers who are not members of the Florida Tomato Growers Exchange and who will pay . . . the additional penny per pound.”
The CIW said it’s not enough because Chipotle will review its own conduct and decide if changes need to be made rather than working directly with them to make adjustments.
