Arvada police said today that they are still investigating the circumstances that led to a 17-year-old skateboarder’s death Sunday.

Austin Ayers was killed when he grabbed the passenger door of Jeep Wrangler to hitch a ride on his skateboard in the 6500 block of Oak Street about 12:30 p.m.

The boy was hit by the vehicle and then the pavement. He died of his injuries at St. Anthony’s Central Hospital in Denver.

The name of the Jeep’s 34-year-old driver is being withheld until the investigation is finished, according to a statement from Arvada police.
