TABERNASH, Colo.—One man is hospitalized in critical condition in Denver after a shooting involving a Grand County sheriff’s deputy.

Authorities say the deputy was patrolling near Tabernash about 7 p.m. Monday when he received a report of a possible drunken driver swerving into oncoming traffic on U.S. Highway 40 near Granby.

The deputy soon spotted a vehicle matching the description of the suspect’s car, but the driver took off before the deputy could make a traffic stop. The deputy pursued the vehicle, and they crashed a short time later.

Grand County sheriff’s officials say an encounter occurred between the suspect and the deputy, and the deputy shot the driver.

The man’s mother, Dawn North, told the Rocky Mountain News Tuesday her son is a schizophrenic and that doctors told her he may be paralyzed because of his injuries.

“This is my son. They shot my boy,” North said.

The man’s name has not been released.
