SAN LUIS, Colo.—Prosecutors have filed a second-degree murder charge against a San Luis man accused of shooting his son to death.

Bonifacio Lobato appeared in Costilla County Court in San Luis on Monday. Judge Kimberly L. Wood set bail at $200,000 and issued a gag order preventing attorneys, law-enforcement officers and others from discussing the case publicly.

The 40-year-old Lobato is accused in the Sept. 23 death of 20-year-old Dominic L. Lobato. Authorities have said they were arguing over money.

Wood quashed defense attorney Alonzo Payne’s subpoena for Eric Mullens, a reporter for the Alamosa-based Valley Courier.

Payne said he wanted to ask Mullens about stories he had written about Lobato, but Payne didn’t object when the newspaper’s attorney asked to have the subpoena quashed.
