MONTE VISTA, Colo.—Investigators say a bone fragment was found outside a Monte Vista home linked to a woman who disappeared more than six years ago, but they don’t know whether it came from a human.
The Rio Grande County Sheriff’s Department said Tuesday the 3-inch-long fragment was found in a compartment below a trap door in the floor of a shed. Deputies say the El Paso County coroner will determine whether the bone is human.
Authorities say the shed was in the yard of home that was once owned by a woman whose son was living with 19-year-old Danice Day when she disappeared in January 2002.
Deputies say drug paraphernalia and empty liquor bottles were also found in the space below the trap door, as well as a missing poster of Day and a step ladder to get inside the pit.
Day had two children.
Monte Vista is 160 miles south of Denver.
