Sen. Ken Salazar, Gov. Bill Ritter and U.S. Rep. John Salazar were among a crew of elected leaders who continued a three-day RV “rural tour” for Barack Obama on Thursday, spiraling through the state’s prettiest and most rural areas to reach out to voters. At small rallies in Pueblo, Cañon City, Salida, Gunnison and Montrose, the Democrats pushed Obama’s message for change in areas that are leaning “royal blue” and “purple”political-speak for the state’s battleground, rural counties.
On the way to Cañon City, the RV was pulled over by a sheriff’s deputy on U.S. 50 with Sen. Salazar at the wheel. The deputy said the month and year tags on the rented RV were in the wrong place. Former Gov. Roy Romer came to the driver’s window, and the deputy recognized the pair. “Gov. Romer! I haven’t seen you since I was a little kid,” state Obama campaign manager Ray Rivera said the deputy yelled through the window. They were not ticketed.
Today, they’ll travel from Montrose to Grand Junction and along the Interstate 70 corridor east back to Denver, stopping in mountain towns along the way.
