DENVER—The Colorado Bureau of Investigation is acquiring three automated DNA analyzers to shorten the time it takes to process samples from crime scenes.
Lance Clem, a spokesman for the Department of Public Safety, which oversees the CBI, said Friday the machines are being added to labs in Lakewood, Pueblo and Grand Junction.
The machines can analyze 100 samples in a few hours. Clem says the CBI hopes to cut the time it takes to analyze evidence submitted by law enforcement agencies from six months to 30 days.
The move comes as police and sheriff’s deputies increasingly collect DNA evidence in property crimes as well as violent crimes.
Clem says the state received grants totaling $1.2 million from the National Institute of Justice for the machines.
