A 77-year-old man was killed and his 69-year-old wife was seriously injured tonight when the pickup he was driving near Pagosa Springs rolled in a one-vehicle accident, authorities say.

Carlos Trujillo of Pagosa Springs was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident and Crucita Trujillo was taken by helicopter to San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington, N.M., with serious injuries, said Trooper Gilbert Mares, spokesman for the Colorado State Patrol.

Carlos Trujillo was driving a red 1995 Toyota pickup truck northbound on Colorado Highway 84 at 5:10 p.m. about four miles south of Pagosa Springs when lost control of the truck, which rolled on the left side of the highway down an embankment, Mares said.

Troopers suspect he was trying to pass another car when the accident happened, but there were no witnesses available when they arrived at the scene, he said.

The southbound lane of the highway is closed while it is cleared and the accident is investigated, Mares said.
