CHEYENNE — Albany County coroner Tom Furgeson says he is looking into missing records from his predecessor, including missing autopsy reports in the 1998 Matthew Shepard murder and the 2001 traffic deaths of eight college athletes.

In a letter drafted to Albany County commissioners, Furgeson detailed efforts to obtain records from former coroner Julie Heggie in 2007, including which reports are missing and his future plans.

Furgeson said in the letter he is pulling all vouchers for autopsies in Albany County between 2003 and 2006 and cross-referencing the payments with records Heggie handed over in July 2007.

Autopsies missing from the coroner’s office include those of Shepard, eight University of Wyoming cross-country and track team members killed by a drunken driver in 2001, a 2004 Interstate 80 pileup and an uncharged infant homicide, Furgeson stated in the letter.
