At least a dozen steel storm-sewer grates are missing from the streets of Colorado Springs, and authorities believe thieves may be trying to sell them to metal-recycling centers.
The grates cost between $300 to $600 each to replace, authorities said. Some of the grates had to be reordered or reconstructed in house.
Police have alerted recycling centers about the thefts.
In recent months, reports of stolen metals — everything from copper roofing to water-sprinkler connectors — have increased across the state.
