GUNNISON — Quarterback David Pesek had a hand in three touchdowns in the first half to give Colorado Mines an 18-point lead, then added two more in the second half to lead the Orediggers (5-2, 4-1 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) to a 41-13 road win over Western State at the Mountaineer Bowl on Saturday.
The Mountaineers (2-4, 2-3) started the scoring with William Harris’ 18-yard field goal, then Pesek got Mines on the scoreboard with a 5-yard pass to junior wideout Adam Saur. Pesek ran the ball in from 22 yards, then hooked up with Robbin Vinnola on an 8-yard scoring play.
Western cut the deficit to 21-13 on a 13-yard Cameron Merrill-to-Shaun Suttorp pass and a 16-yard field goal by Kevin Daugherty. Mines answered with a 6-yard run by Pesek. The game turned into a blowout with a 35-yard blocked punt return by James Tucker and another 6-yard run by Pesek.
Adams State 6, Fort Lewis 0
ALAMOSA — It certainly was no track meet, but a player named Bolt was the “star” of this defensive battle.
Redshirt freshman Dustin Bolt kicked first-half field goals of 48 and 42 yards, and the Adams State defense held Fort Lewis to 81 total yards in a game played in blustery winds and intermittent rain in the Grizzlies’ homecoming game at Rex Stadium.
Adams State (2-5, 2-3 RMAC) held the Skyhawks (2-5, 1-4) to a combined 1-for-17 on third- and fourth-down conversions and compiled a season-high seven sacks. It was the first shutout for Adams State since 2005.
The Grizzlies, who ran the ball a season-high 54 times for 170 yards, have won the Musket Game 11 of the past 12 years.
Mesa State 26, CSU-Pueblo 3
GRAND JUNCTION — Phil Vigil threw two touchdown passes to Maurice Manley, and Jared Keating kicked four field goals to lead the Mavericks (5-2, 5-0 RMAC) to a home win at Stocker Stadium.
Vigil and Manley hooked up from 15 yards out early in the second quarter and from the 14-yard line early in the fourth.
Running back Bobby Coy was again the workhorse for Mesa, rushing 28 times for 237 yards. The Mesa defense held the Thunderwolves (2-4, 1-4) to 13 first downs and 204 total yards.
Chadron State 43, Western New Mexico 17
CHADRON, Neb. — Joe McLain completed 25-of-42 passes for 250 yards and five touchdowns for the Eagles (6-1, 5-0 RMAC), ranked No. 13 in Division II. The Mustangs remain winless at 0-6, 0-5.
Nebraska-Kearney 58, New Mexico Highlands 14
KEARNEY, Neb. — Jake Spitzelberger, a redshirt freshman from Bear Creek High School, completed 8-of-9 passes for 181 yards and three touchdowns as the Lopers (4-3, 4-1 RMAC) rolled up 564 yards of total offense and cruised past the Cowboys (1-6, 1-4).
