COLORADO SPRINGS — Unable to cash in on the man advantage for five periods during the weekend, Colorado College’s power play came through in the nick of time Saturday.
Freshman defenseman Gabe Guentzel and sophomore winger Stephen Schultz scored power-play goals just 88 seconds apart early in the third period, sparking the Tigers to a 5-3 victory over Alabama-Huntsville and a sweep of their two-game series at the World Arena.
Guentzel’s first career goal, a rising slap shot from the right point, snapped a 2-2 tie just 1:18 after UAH had pulled even for the second time in the game. Schultz’s deflection less than a minute and a half later ended up being the game-winner, as the Chargers kept things close with a four-on-four tally with 5:42 left to play.
Chad Rau, who also collected two assists, iced the triumph with an empty-net goal with 9.2 seconds remaining.
Guentzel added an assist on a first-period goal by senior winger Eric Walsky, and junior defenseman Brian Connelly set up both of the pivotal power-play markers.
Junior defenseman Nate Prosser also lit the lamp for the Tigers, who outshot UAH 41-20 and held the visitors scoreless on nine power plays.
CC finished 2-for-7 on the power play after going 0-9 in Friday’s 1-0 victory.
Brennan Barker and Andrew Coburn each had a goal and an assist for Alabama-Huntsville, which got a 36-save performance from junior netminder Blake MacNicol. Senior goalie Drew O’Connell finished with 17 stops for Colorado College.
Air Force 4, Sacred Heart 3 (OT)
MILFORD, Conn. — Senior Josh Frider scored the game-winner with 2:56 left in overtime in Air Force’s Atlantic Hockey Association victory.
The Falcons swept the two-game series and improved to 2-0 on the season and in AHA play. Sacred Heart fell to 0-2, 0-2.
The Falcons took a 2-1 lead with second-period goals by Matt Fairchild and Jacques Lamoureux. Air Force took a 3-2 lead with 2:06 left in the third period on Frider’s first goal of the game.
“This is a tough building to play in and a very difficult team to play against,” Air Force coach Frank Serratore said.
